Grass Facts

  • Grass plants are 70 to 80% water and clippings are 90% water

  • 90% of the weight of grass is in its roots

  • A 10,000 square foot lawn will contain: 6 grass plants per square inch, 850 plants per square foot, 8.5 million plants total

  • The front lawns of 8 average houses have the same cooling effect as 24 (3-4 ton capacity) home central air conditioning units

  • Turfgrasses trap much of an estimated 12 million tons of dust and dirt released annually into the U.S. atmosphere.

  • Turfgrasses help purify water entering underground aquifers by its root mass and soil microbes acting as a filter to capture and breakdown many types of pollutants.

  • A dense lawn is 6 times more effective than a wheat field and 4 times better than a hayfield at absorbing rainfall.

  • A 50 by 50 foot turfgrass lawn (2,500 square feet) releases enough oxygen for a family of four, while absorbing carbon dioxide, hydrogen fluoride and perosyacetyle nitrate.
Top 10 Lawn Tips:

Provided by consumer reports:
  • Grow the right grass for your area.
Here in Michigan, where winters are cold and
summers are cool and humid, the magazine
recommends Kentucky bluegrass, fine
fescue and perennial ryegrass.

  • Don't cut too much at once.
Cut no more then one-third of the grass
blade's height at once.

  • Fertilize at the right time of the year
Consumer reports suggest fertilizing northern
lawns primarily in the fall.

  • Water early in the day, not at night.
Late-day watering encourages pests, mold
and disease because water doesn't evaporate
before sunset.

  • Choose the right fertilizer.
This may require local expert advice or a soil
test.

  • Don't mow wet grass.
It gets green gunk all over the innards of your
lawn mower.

  • Don't mow to low.
A super-short lawn is a lawn with shallow
roots and weak grass.

  • Don't underwater.
Make up for any lack of rain.  Watch for
foot-prints on the lawn; if they remain after
you walk across it, its a sign that grass
blades are dry.

  • Don't over water.
Too much invites mold and disease and
wastes precious H2o.  A rain gage helps you
figure out how much water is enough.  Stop
watering if water is running off your lawn.

  • Don't bag clippings.
Leave them where they fall to reduce fertilizer
needs by as much as one-third.
